I liked this book! It is a leisurely introduction to projective and Cayley-Klein geometry. By leisurely, I mean it is 550 pages long and goes into all the details of the proofs and constructions, with lots of explanation and motivation for the development of the theory. The author does not use “The proof is obvious” which then leaves you with two or more hours of work to figure it out. The book is intended to be accessible to an undergraduate audience, and the author claims that the reader needs only linear algebra. Of course, more is always better. And any math book that includes a Calvin and Hobbes cartoon strip (p. 295) has got to be good. Further, the figures with the constructions are in color. You can distinguish the red lines from the green lines (dark blue from black, not so much). Good stuff.So why isn't it a perfect 5-stars? The price on Amazon in 2016 for a new copy of this hard-cover book is $57 USD. For a 550-page book from Springer, this is pretty cheap. Where did they save on production expenses? It seems that the savings were in proof-reading.You can't go for long without seeing an obvious typo. Occasionally, there are several on one page. They are really obvious, if you are following the text. Things like mislabeling elements in the figures. Or, within a proof, changing the letter that identifies a point (or line) midway through the proof. Or, in an equation, just using the wrong letter.I will give you an example. On page 471, there are six pictures of mathematicians above the label “The non-Euclidean geometry hall of fame.” The six pictures are all different. Unfortunately, two of the pictures are labeled “E. Beltrami.” So, first you have to figure out who is missing (Janos Bolyai). And then which Beltrami is really Bolyai.I accepted these typos as a kind of exercise for the reader. They kept me alert. The author includes an extensive bibliography, from which I have purchased additional books. I did read the entire book and enjoyed it. Four stars, if you can accept the typos.
